Bicycles are the most efficient vehicles ever made - getting 892 mpg - and are widely
used throughout the world for everyday trips.
Around here, half of all auto trips are five miles or less. If short
trips like these were taken by bicycle instead of by car, it would reduce vehicle emissions and improve
our health through exercise. Many of us (46% of Washington residents) do not exercise enough and
commuting or making other short trips by bicycle is a quick and fun way to fit in a workout
(a 5 mile bike ride takes just 30 minutes).
Workplaces that provide showers and safe spots to lock bicycles address concerns of convenience and
professional appearance. Bike buddy programs pair a new bicycle commuter with an experienced rider
who can help choose safe routes and offer tips on equipment and bicycle safety.
Many street repairs that help bicyclists are also beneficial to the speed and safety of other types
of traffic (paving shoulders, fixing potholes), and building bicycle paths that can be used for
both transportation and recreation is another great way to invest in this active form of transportation.
Working for more funding for bike lanes and facilities is part of Transportation Choices'
Active Transportation Program.
